We recently had our family photos taken by the amazing Maggie Fuller Photography. I now realize the full effort on the client's side that goes into planning and prepping for a family photo session, and wanted to share all my tips!
4 weeks out:
Moms, have your hair cut/colored. Sometimes it can take a while for your new 'do to "settle". You never know when your stylist may go a little too short on your bangs or you may not love your cut, and this will give ample time for regrowth.
Start shopping for outfits. Have a color scheme in mind before hitting the stores. Think about the colors that your family looks best in. I know that my family looks best in cool colors, like blues and greens. Consider adding a pop of a complementary color to your base color. You can also use monochromatic, analogous or triadic color schemes. Mom and Dad can always wear neutral colors. Check your closets for what you may already have. Also think about accessories, like scarves, hats, or jewelry to help pull in your pop of color. Shoes are very important too. For boys, try to find a fun color converse or boat shoes. Also think about how your family will look in close ups. Do you like the colors that will frame your faces? Don't be afraid to buy everything you think may work! It can always be returned! (Double check your store's return policy first) It is also nice to let older children choose between 2 or 3 outfits (that you've pre-approved) to let them feel like they are part of the process. I returned an insane amount of clothes after our photo session!
2-3 weeks out:
Have your children's hair cut.
1 week out:
Manis/pedis, eyebrows waxed. Pedicures are a must if you are wearing sandals! Make sure your daughter's nails are either painted or old paint is removed. Determine and try on all final outfits. This is also the time you can tell your older children that you're going to have family photos taken (unless you've already talked to them about it when picking outfits). Tell them what to expect, keeping the discussion light-hearted and fun. For younger children, sometimes it's best to just show up to the photo shoot without telling them ahead of time. However, parents know their children best and know the ideal way to prepare them for this type of situation.
Night before:
Iron all outfits and trim extra threads. No one wants to see new shirt creases in their photos!
The day of your session:
For younger children, consider dressing them at the photo shoot location. You never know when someone may get carsick, or a sippy cup may leak on the way. Bring a comb and a spray bottle of water to tame potential carseat hair. Clean noses, eye goo, and put lip balm on lips. Closeups show everything! Dads, be prepared to take everything out of your pockets and leave sunglasses in the car. Moms, apply your final coat of lipstick.
